City of Dreams – Watch Online / Timelapse Trailer

Three years ago this week, I had an idea for a film, but I didn’t own a camera or have any filmmaking experience. In fact, I had difficulty even describing the film and couldn’t really figure out how to write a script without dialogue. It was all just mood boards and a single piece of paper describing the various “movements” – I had to borrow music terminology. Despite various attempts to involve professional filmmakers and editors, I ultimately had to shoot, edit, and do the sound myself. In the process, I discovered an entire visual world hidden within our existing world, and became obsessed with the camera’s ability to reveal it. The way I saw the world changed, and with it I did too – irrevocably.

It is tempting to try to explain the film to people now that it is completed, but that won’t change how anyone feels about it. Understanding the history of non-narrative films and video art won’t change whether you like it or not, because our reactions to art are primarily emotional and not intellectual. All I would ask is that if you do enjoy watching it, please tell a friend or two about it and ask them to do the same. This film isn’t for everyone – it is for the unconventional person who is sometimes a bit turned off by conventional films and TV. So there it is: a film for people who don’t like movies, by a filmmaker who doesn’t know filmmaking.

EDIT: Film is no longer available to watch online
